The Careers & Enterprise Company
The Careers & Enterprise Company was announced in December 2014 by the Secretary of State for Education, Rt. Hon. Nicky Morgan MP with £20 million of Government funding, including £5 million from the Investment Fund.
It is employer-led, set up to inspire and prepare young people for the fast-changing world of work and to help shape this future workforce to meet local needs.
One of its key aims will be to broker more effective relationships between employers and schools/colleges to enable young people to make informed career choices and develop work-ready skills.
The Hertfordshire programme
We are working in partnership with Youth Connexions Hertfordshire (HCC) who will provide access to around 80 schools/colleges.
A team of Enterprise Co-ordinators will engage with schools/colleges in order to both develop an action plan and to match them with an Enterprise Advisor who will act as a mentor to the school/college.
Enterprise Advisers are volunteers from local employers. Typically they will be in senior leadership roles and will work at a strategic level to help draw up effective employer engagement plans for schools and colleges.
Benefits for employers
The aim of setting up a local Enterprise Adviser network is to create powerful, lasting connections between local businesses and schools and colleges in the area. By belonging to this network you can help resolve skills issues and tailor the development of both your current and future workforce.
By volunteering as an Enterprise Adviser you will have a direct impact both on improving the opportunities for young people and plugging the gaps in skills provision. Enterprise Co-ordinators will provide assistance throughout the process. The commitment would be over a 12 month period with a face-to-face meeting per half term, with remote email/phone support as necessary.
Benefits for schools and colleges
Foster more effective and lasting connections with local businesses which will increase opportunities for young people. By working directly with an Enterprise Adviser senior leadership team members in schools/colleges can deliver a careers education strategy that is tailored to meet local employers’ needs.
